Durham SU provides storage spaces in Dunelm House to support the activities of registered student groups. Storage is limited, so groups must follow the rules below to ensure the space is used safely, fairly, and effectively.
Before requesting or using storage, student groups should read the Student Group Storage Policy, which explains the full rules and responsibilities for storing equipment in Dunelm House.
Student groups are responsible for keeping their storage areas tidy and organised, and items are stored at your group’s own risk. Durham SU cannot accept responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged property. Please also remember that items purchased using student group funds belong to Durham SU and must be stored and managed in line with SU policies.
Storage spaces must remain safe and accessible at all times, so walkways, doors, and fire exits must be kept clear. The SU may carry out spot checks and remove items that are stored incorrectly or appear to be abandoned. If you notice storage rules are not being followed in shared spaces, you can raise this with ASK SU.
STORAGE BOXES
Each registered student group can claim one storage box in Dunelm House free of charge. If your group needs additional storage, extra boxes may be borrowed from the SU with a £10 deposit per box, which will be returned when the box is handed back in good condition.
All items must be stored inside SU-issued storage boxes, and loose items, cardboard boxes, or bags should not be left in storage areas. Boxes must have lids that close fully and should not be overfilled.
Groups should also keep an asset list of the contents of their box, stored on the underside of the lid, to help keep track of equipment. Boxes must be stacked no more than four high and placed within the marked storage zones to ensure the space remains safe and accessible for everyone.
LARGE EQUIPMENT
Some items are too large to fit inside storage boxes, such as aerial rigs or safety mats. These items may be stored in designated spaces if they:
- are clearly labelled with your group name
- are stored safely and neatly in your group's dedicated zone
- are returned promptly after use
Groups may be asked to confirm each term that these items are still in use.
ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
Electrical equipment must be stored separately in the C-Level store (C03) and registered with the SU.
Each item must be labelled with your group name and have either proof of purchase within the last 12 months or evidence of a valid PAT test. If this cannot be provided, the SU may arrange PAT testing and charge your group accordingly.
ACCESS TO STORAGE ROOMS
Each storage room has a combination lock outside the door which provides access to the key for that room. Codes will be shared with exec who store items in those rooms only, and will be changed numerous times throughout the academic year. Access can also be arranged through staff or student staff working within the building.
Storage rooms are intended for student group committee members only. General members should only enter storage areas if accompanied by a committee member or SU staff member.
WHAT CAN'T WE STORE?
The following items must not be stored in Dunelm House storage areas:
- hazardous or flammable materials
- pressurised containers (such as gas canisters)
- fireworks or similar items
- any food or drinks. (Authorisation should be obtained from your lead staff contact for food/drink items that directly relate to the group's main purpose, e.g. tea leaves for Chinese Tea Art.)
