University can be challenging, and it’s completely normal to struggle at times. Whether you’re finding the workload overwhelming, having trouble understanding concepts, or just feeling a bit lost, the most important thing is to reach out for support sooner rather than later.
Talk to Your Department: Your module leader, academic advisor or department student support officer are there to help. If you’re struggling with specific topics, they can provide guidance or suggest additional resources.
Use the Academic Skills Centre: The Academic Skills Centre offers workshops, one-to-one support, and online resources to help with everything from essay writing and research skills to time management and revision techniques.
Connect with Your College Support Team: Each college has student support officers who can offer advice on both academic and personal challenges. Sometimes, just talking things through can help you figure out a way forward.
Study Groups & Peer Support: Don’t underestimate the power of studying with others. Forming or joining a study group can make learning more interactive and help clarify difficult topics.
Look After Yourself: Academic challenges can feel worse if you’re exhausted or stressed. Make sure you’re taking breaks, getting enough sleep, and reaching out for wellbeing support if needed.
Remember, struggling doesn’t mean failing. Durham has plenty of support available—you just need to take the first step and ask for help!
WHAT IF MY DEPARTMENT HAS CONCERNS ABOUT MY PROGRESS?
If your department becomes concerned about your progress or if you’ve been absent without authorisation, they will get in touch with you to discuss the situation. Your college may also be involved to offer extra support at this stage.
If you don’t respond or your progress doesn’t improve, you may receive an academic progress notice. This will outline specific actions you need to take and warn that you could be withdrawn from the University if things don’t improve.
Your department will follow a clear process, giving you your progress, you’ll have the right to appeal. Your college will be kept informed throughout the process.
It's best not to let things get this fof you're facing difficulties, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your department or college. They are there to help, and it’s important to communicate so you can get the support you need.
