What is the Student Group Committee and what do they do?

WHAT IS THE COMMITTEE?

Durham Students’ Union is the body supporting over 300 amazing student groups covering a diverse range of activities and campaigns.

The key to the success of these groups is not only a strong executive team and enthusiastic members, but also an overarching committee that helps to make key decisions about how student groups can be best supported. Student Group Committee has power as defined in the Standing Orders and exists to represent student priorities for the development and support of student groups to Durham SU and Durham University.

WHO SITS ON THE COMMITTEE?

There are 9 elected category representatives (see categories below) that make up the Committee, plus the SU Communities Officer and chaired by the SU's Societies Officer.

  • Academic
  • Active
  • Associations
  • Cultural & Faith
  • Fundraising
  • Interests
  • Media
  • Political & Cause
  • Professional Development

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITES OF THE COMMITTEE?

  1. Identify and discuss matters relating to Student Groups.
  2. Review and recommend changes to the Student Group Agreement
  3. Identify, draft, adopt or recommend policy on issues relating to student groups
  4. Work to develop Student Groups and their members
  5. Student Groups Committee will formally accept an application for a Student Group to be entered onto the Register

WHAT ARE THE COMMITMENTS?

The committee will meet approximately 3 times per term, or as required by the Communities Committee. Committee members are also expected to attend the Student Group Forum where they will represent their elected category. We also expect them to take ownership of their category and act as a liaison between the student groups and the ASK staff team, communicating any issues and resolutions.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

Not only do you get to help Durham SU further support a diverse family of student groups and activities, the transferable skills that you will take from the Committee are:

  • Leadership
  • Research
  • Accountability
  • Decision making
  • Team work
  • Time management
  • Organisation
  • Communication
  • Representation

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

If you are interested in sitting on the Committee, we normally elect members at the start of each academic year. To run for a position on the Committee, you need to be the President of a Durham SU group within the category that you want to run for to be eligible, and you will need to submit a self-nomination once opened. If nominations are not open then please get in touch with the ASK Team here to register your interest and we will let you know when nominations are open.
