What Is A Referendum?

Referendums can be carried out when you want to consult with your student group members about changes to your group, in most cases this will be a change to your student group constitution (if you want to change the groups aims for example, or add positions to / amend your exec committee, or even change your group name). Any changes to your constitution must be put to members, the changes explained, and members given a chance to vote on whether to approve the changes or not. Please see the article "How To Make Changes to Your Student Group’s Constitution" for further information on this.

These changes can be put to members and voted on in-person at a General Meeting or an AGM (details on how to arrange and run these meetings can be found in the "How To Run A GM / AGM" article).

If your group hasn’t got any GM’s or AGM’s planned then you can run a referendum online instead to put the constitution change to members and allow them to vote. Much like an online election, the referendum will be set up on the SU website; only your group members that have purchased a membership via our website will be able to log in and view the referendum. They can then cast their votes as to whether they approve the proposed changes or not.

If you would like to go ahead and arrange an online referendum, please have a look at our dedicated article: How To Set Up An Online Referendum
