Are Candidates For Elections Allowed To Campaign?

Yes, candidates are allowed to campaign for the positions they have self-nominated for, as long as the campaigning is lawful, fair and positive. Whilst campaigning, candidates and campaigners must look after the safety and welfare of themselves and others.

There are a few things that candidates can’t do, however, as listed below, so if you’re running an election (whether online or in-person) please make sure that all candidates are aware of these.

Candidates can’t:

•    Be given a campaign budget and must not use any of their own, or third-party, funds to campaign.

•    Be sponsored or endorsed by any external organisations.

•    Influence a student whilst they are voting.

•    Give money to other students to join the student group and vote for them.

•    Campaign negatively against any of the other candidates running.

Candidates should also consider the implications of asking students to join a group just to canvas votes; All of our groups have to reach a certain quorum of students to be able to run some meetings, make changes to their group etc, and if the group membership increases significantly with people joining just to vote, and not participate in the group activities, this can have a detrimental effect on the group’s ability to function.
