How To Make Changes to Your Student Group’s Constitution

Sometimes you may feel like you need to update something about your group. Most of the areas of change will fall into a change of the constitution, as this document governs the way in which your group is run. Some examples are the name of the group, the make-up of the Executive Committee (i.e. the roles, their names and duties), the aims of the group, the quorum amount, the benefits of the group, as well as many others.

First, you will need to check Clause 10.2 of the Constitution to see whether the area you would like to amend falls within one of the areas which requires prior written consent of the SU before continuing the process. If you do not have a copy of your group’s constitution, you can request one from the SU. If you find that you need to make a change in one of those areas, you use the form to get in touch with us. If not, or if you have written consent from the SU, the Constitution may be amended at a General Meeting, with approval of at least 50% + 1 of those members present.

Clause 4 of the constitution sets out how to call a general meeting. Some of the information in this document is group specific (e.g. your group’s specific numbers for quorum) so you will need to check your own group’s document.

Did you know it is possible for the SU to set up an online referendum vote on the website for your members to vote for constitution changes. If you would like to take the opportunity to do this, then you can find out more information in our dedicated article: How To Set Up An Online Referendum.

Once the voting has finished, you will need to supply the SU with an updated copy of your constitution (if the motion has been passed) as well as the minutes from the meeting by submitting that information here
