There are two ways which we permit to run an election:
1. Elections can be held in-person during a General Meeting or Annual General Meeting (GM or AGM). You will need to give your members notice in advance that you are planning to host an election during the meeting and the positions this is for so an interested member of the group can self-nominate before the meeting. You can view our “How To Run A GM / AGM” article for more information on how to set up and run these meetings normally.
2. Elections can be held electronically online via the Durham SU website. This is the only platform permitted to run online elections - all other platforms (Google forms, WhatsApp chats etc) are not permitted to carry out elections and you will be asked to re-run your election if other platforms are used.
Please note, you may use a combination of both the methods listed above. E.g. your online self-nominated candidates hust at your GM in-person, but voting happens electronically on the SU website over the next following days.
We do have further guidance on both of the methods above. Please see our articles on “How To Run An In-Person Election” or “How To Run An Online Election” guidance to find out more.
