The Difference Between A Student Group And An Association

Student Groups exist to bring students with common interests together, whether that be an interest in a particular hobby, academic interests to bring people together who are on the same course, or people with similar career interests to help develop skills for those future careers. The aims of most of our Student Groups is to get people together, share those common interests and help other students find people within Durham who like similar things to them.

Associations however are responsible for providing representation and, where appropriate, support and social opportunities and activities, for students identifying with those Associations’.

Associations exist for the benefit of students who are:

  1. Marginalised, oppressed or disadvantaged in society as a result of an element of their identity.
  2. Marginalised, oppressed or disadvantaged within their university experience due to the way in which they access their education.

Our Associations provide a space where self-defining students can come together, discuss the issues affecting them, and campaign to improve the student experience. We’re proud to represent a diverse student membership, and Associations form part of the proactive steps we take to create a positive and welcoming environment for all.
