What Grants Are Available and How Do We Apply?

INTERNAL GRANTS

Durham SU student groups can apply for a grant from the SU (including newly ratified groups and associations) for up to a total of £500 for this academic year. This funding would supplement other sources of income, such as membership fees, and is to be applied for, and used, solely for the benefit of your members in line with the aims of your group and the charitable aims of Durham SU.

To be considered for grant funding your application requires:

  • At least one member of your group exec having attended the SU’s finance training session.
  • A budget detailing projected costs and clear areas where the grant money would be spent.
  • Evidence to support the above budget, such as screen shots of projected expenditure, invoices, receipts etc.

If your group wants to apply for a grant, please complete the Grant Application Form and submit this, and copy of all evidence (copy of a budget, evidence of costings etc to support your application) to dsu.engagement@durham.ac.uk. Please note that groups cannot apply retrospectively for an event or activity which has already taken place.

Once we receive the application, we will check it all over to make sure all of the relevant evidence is attached, then pass it onto our Student Group Committee for them to decide on. The Committee meets every fortnight during term-time, and we aim to give you feedback shortly after.

The University and Colleges also have some other possible sources of funding so it’s worth doing some research with them to see if there are any grants / funding that your group can apply for.

EXTERNAL GRANTS

There are many funding opportunities and initiatives available to UK charities so it’s worth doing some research within your group area as to whether there are any organisations that offer external funding for groups. As Durham SU is the registered charity (and not your group) if you do find some external funding opportunities then we would need to apply for the grant on your group’s behalf get in touch with us, including the details of the grant that you are wanting to apply for and how. As long as we approve the application, we will work with you in order to complete the process and hopefully secure the funding for your group.

Please read the Grant Allocation Regulations to ensure that you understand what grants can be used to fund, and for advice on completing your application.
