Why Are Risk Assessments Necessary?

Activity providers have a duty of care towards participants and are responsible for ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

For all student group activity, the executive committee of a student group are accountable for the activities provided by the group, and poor health and safety will not only endanger participants, but also potentially harm the reputation of the student group, Durham Students’ Union and the University itself.

Risk Assessments are a key part of our requirements; Durham SU has both a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that student groups and their members are protected against unforeseen circumstances and safeguard us all from reputational and financial risk. To comply with legislation such as charity law, health & safety regulations, and insurance policies, we must assure higher risk activities are supported appropriately.

You should ensure you are familiar with the risk management processes before organising activities and events.
